The historiographical literature dedicated to the architecture of the Friar Preachers in Sicily, if one excludes the few studies on the complexes in Palermo, which are anyhow focussed on the churches only, is still substantially limited to the sporadic studies by local scholars or members of the Order on the history of the Dominicans in Sicily. Sicily currently has no forest areas with certification of sustainable forest management. This work analyzes the possibility of applying the criteria and indicators of PEFC certification of sustainable forest management in two study-cases: the municipal forest of Bivona (AG) and a forest area in the Madonie Mountains (PA). Both are representative of different and important Sicilian forest ecosystems. This analysis highlights the main weaknesses related to current forest management practices and the inadequate consultation with stakeholders.

On September 1st 1726 Palermo was hit by a violent earthquake. Although it did not bring about the destruction of the city, the earthquake caused widespread and extensive damage to the architectural heritage. The local insti- tutions carried out a series of actions involving representatives of the technical culture. These actions affected the subsequent appearance of the urban pattern and influenced the construction methods of the time. Crossing the data taken from chronicles of the time, from maps produced after the earthquake and above all copious archival documents, the research aims to reconstruct the state in which Palermo was after that tragic event, highlighting a number of aspects. …

Dans cet article, nous nous occuperons des données quantitatives et qualitatives recueillies durant les vingt-cinq dernières années en Sicile. Ces données ont été collectées dans le cadre d’une enquête sur le terrain de grande ampleur qui a intéressé la Sicile entière dans le contexte des activités de l’Atlas linguistique de la Sicile (ALS). En particulier, nous observerons les données sur la perception et sur la représentation des différences linguistiques recueillies à travers trois questions du questionnaire ALS. Differential Greek and northern African migrations to Sicily are supported by genetic evidence from the Y chromosome

The presence or absence of genetic heterogeneity in Sicily has long been debated. Through the analysis of the variation of Y-chromosome lineages, using the combination of haplogroups and short tandem repeats from several areas of Sicily, we show that traces of genetic flows occurred in the island, due to ancient Greek colonization and to northern African contributions, are still visible on the basis of the distribution of some lineages. The genetic contribution of Greek chromosomes to the Sicilian gene pool is estimated to be about 37% whereas the contribution of North African populations is estimated to be around 6%. Abstract The present paper aims to show, both from a stratigraphic and structural points of view, the main features of a wedge-top syntectonic basin which evolved recording polyphase and non-coaxial tectonics. The study area is the Scillato Basin ( SB ), a roughly N–S-oriented structural depression located in the central-northern sector of the Sicililian Maghrebides. There, an approximately 1300 m-thick upper Serravallian to upper Tortonian succession of clastic units outcrops as a portion of the Neogene syntectonic covers of the Sicilian fold and thrust belt.
